Expression Web 3 - How to Publish a Web Site

Publishing a Site with Expression Web 3

Expression Web 3 provides a few different Publishing Options.  Some of these options are New to Expression Web 3.

For instance,  2 new Publishing Options have been added:

  • 1.  SFTP - this is a Secure File Transfer Protocol.
  • 2.  FTPS - this too is a more Secure version of the File Transfer Protocol

Publishing with these options will depend upon your web hosting provider and whether they support these publishing protocols.  Best thing to do is give them a call or email and find out.  Be sure to obtain the connection settings needed in Expression Web.

Using FTP via Expression Web 3 to Publish

We will start with Publishing  via an FTP connection, which is the most common publishing method.  Then we will review how to publish via FrontPage Server Extensions.

Publishing Overview

What do I need before I can publish a web site?

1.  You will need a Web Hosting Provider.

When we publish a web site, we are publishing our files to a remote server.  This is where our web pages and other files will be stored until someone requests to see some of our pages.

In essence, web hosting is a way to rent storage space on a server.  Typically, one server can store thousands of web sites.  Or, you can shell out a few extra bucks (or more) to have your own server.  But really, most of us just need a small amount of space.

You can plan on spending about $6-7 a month for hosting.

2.  You need a Domain Name.  This is the URL people will type into a browser in order to find your web site.

Some Web Hosting providers will include one free domain name along with the hosting your purchase.  For instance, Hostmonster is one of the Web Hosts that I use and they include a free domain name with their web hosting packages.  This will save you about $15 per year.

I also use Hostgator (see below) for some of my web sites.  Both HostMonster and Hostgator support FrontPage Server Extensions.  Both also provide many free programs like a Wordpress blog, Content Management Systems, Image Galleries, You can also set up a Forum, and a lot more.

I will tell you, I like Hostmonster a little bit better.  You get the free domain name plus you can get Private Registration for that domain name without paying an arm and a leg.  Private Registration will help you avoid receiving email scams related to domain registrars.  I had a client who was getting all kinds of email scams monthly until I had him set up Private Registration.  This will prevent your personal info from being listed in the Who Is web site as well.  Afterall, this is where these other companies get your email address and other personal info.

Plus, the customer service and help forum were very friendly and easy to contact when help was needed.  Customer Service and minimal Downtime are two important factors I look at when shopping for web hosting.  I have never had downtime problems with Hostmonster.  And very few problems with Hostgator.

Once you have web hosting set up with your domain name, you will be set to publish.

You will Need:

1.  Your web hosting username and password handy.

2.  If you are going to use FrontPage Server Extensions, then you will need to install them before publishing.  (I will show you how easy this is to do!)

3. If you want to publish via the FTP option, then you will need to set up your ftp account within your hosting.  (I will also provide you with the correct settings to use in Expression Web.)

You may be wondering, 'which method should I use to publish?'  I say, it really doesn't matter which method you use.  However, sometime in the near future don't be surprised if FrontPage Server Extensions are completely gone.  Still, that is easy to deal with when the time comes.  It's not difficult to switch from FPSEs to FTP and vice versa.  So pick one method and stick with it.  Don't go back and forth between methods.

Sometimes you may find certain situations that may not work with FrontPage Server Extensions.  I recently used a trial software for a user login system and it would not work on any sites I used FrontPage Server Extensions.    This is just one example.

None the less, I will teach you the two different ways you can publish.

As for FTPS and SFTP, these are considered more secure publishing methods and we need to check with our web hosting providers to see if they are supported.  Typically, FTP and FPSEs are all that is necessary.
